Make it a logical size.
Make the width 100-300 pixels depending on your plan.
If you don't know, make it 200 pixels wide.

Copy the photo and paste it onto the background photo.

Select the background document

> Paste

The new photo is pasted onto a new layer.

The photo is placed in the center.
You may want to move it to another location.
Use the move tool to move the photo where you want it.

Now let's hide it and smudge it back into the photo.
>Layer
>Layer Mask
> Hide All

Your new image disappears completely.
It is still there, but the black mask is hiding it.
Make sure that white is your foreground color.

Select the brush tool.

Get a large soft brush.

If the above brush is not selected,
click on the arrow next to the brush and
select the soft brush from the drop down window

(this is important)
and start to paint in your black mask
(you know the mask is active when it has the mask icon showing).
The hardness in your brush tool should be zero.
Make a guess as to where the photo is located
and start to paint in a circle to increase the area you want to show.
You may want to do decrease the opacity

of the new layer. This is located on the layers pallate.

If you make a mistake you can go to your tools palate and switch the black to the foreground color and paint over where you went too far. If you really mess up, just drag the mask to the trash in the layers palate and start with a new black layer.
Save your work into your collage folder. A good name is collage.psd.
